Gabriel Pionkowski earned a MFA (2013) and MA (2012) from the University of

Wisconsin-Madison, and a BA (2009) in Art Education from Bethany College, Lindsborg, KS, after studying at the Florence University of the Arts, Florence, Italy (2007).


Pionkowski has been awarded residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, ME (2012), the Millay Colony of the Arts, Austerlitz, NY (2013), and was a Milton and Sally Avery Endowed Fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA (2013-2014).


Exhibitions include Stretching Painting, curated by Veronica Roberts at Galerie Lelong, New York, NY (2012), the Wisconsin Triennial at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art,

Madison, WI (2013), Warp and Woof at The Hole, New York, NY (2014), Brand New Second Hand at VIGO Gallery, London, UK (2014), and Fiber Optics, Minus Space, Brooklyn, NY (2015).


Pionkowski was awarded The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2016, and most recently held a solo exhibition, Touching-Self-Touching, at the James Watrous Gallery, Madison, WI (2019).
