I Walk the Line
2009
Installation, Oil on canvas & concrete
One painting in Washington D.C. has been etched in my memory. The inscription read “keep your eyes on the Lord.” Those who did against what they were told fell off a narrow cliff to hell. I fondly remember walking along cracks in the sidewalk. Praying, I would look forward, asking for help to keep me on the line. “I Walk the Line” speaks of this experience. Imagination, an expression of faith, represented in the grounded painting abruptly meets the physical world in which the line becomes so much harder to walk. A quiet western symbol of humility represents my slow reconciliation in understanding why I always stepped off those cracks.

Named after Johnny Cash - “I Walk the Line” (I know you have heard it before, but below are the lyrics to the song if you want to hum along!)

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time.
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I'll admit I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've known proves that it's right
Because you're mine,
I walk the line

You've got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can't hide
For you I know I'd even try to turn the tide
Because you're mine,
I walk the line
